这一位敢作敢为的传奇人物的传记。位二战前丹麦驻美大使霍夫曼（之前曾在中国工作过）对纳持敌视态度，在丹麦被德国占领，政府与德国采取合作时，毅然在美宣布与政府脱离关系，随后亦有不少丹驻外使馆采取同样措施，为解决财政危机，这位精明的大使利用美国急需格陵兰作为控制北大西洋的机会，与美签署允许美在格岛建立基地的协议，换取其支配丹麦政府在美黄金储备。在战后，大使继续留任，而租岛协议至今依然生效。
